Empire City, colloquially known as Yonkers, is a suburban area located approximately 6 miles north of Manhattan in Westchester County, New York. In 1784, the British government divided the land into smaller plots and sold them to various individuals, including Thomas Yonker, who gave his name to the village of Yonkers.
